Upon Further Reflection
May 20 - 25, 2023

On May 19, 2023, the Asian American Pacific Islander Design Alliance (AAPIDA) hosted an opening reception at the 3.1 Phillip Lim flagship retail store in New York City for the opening of “Upon Further Reflection,” an exhibition featuring 20 Asian American and Pacific Islander female-identifying designers and artists.

The show was co-curated by Andrea Hill (Tortuga Forma) and Lora Appleton (Female Design Council). The designers and artists were invited to participate to both challenge and address the ideas of reflection through surface exploration, materiality, and self-discovery. Over 400 guests, including participating designers and artists, friends, and industry leaders, attended the opening reception that coincided with this year’s NYCxDesign.

Designers and artists were invited to participate to both challenge and address the ideas of reflection through surface exploration, materiality, and self discovery. This charged concept of mirroring and reflection is of endless fascination, and especially for the AAPI community, who has struggled to be seen within the historically white-centric United States of America. The result is an extraordinary multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring an array of never-before-seen pieces in a diverse range of artistic mediums, including furniture, sculpture, installation, painting, and ceramic objects, that invites viewers to ponder and question their own reflections.

The show received numerous press coverage, from The New York Times, Elle Decor, Wallpaper* dezeen and more, as seen below.
